Thread of Existence

Geraldine Neuwirth

“I started as a figurative painter and found myself interested in philosophy, abstraction and spiritual concerns,” said Neuwirth. “I was attracted to the inner power of forms and how they make a conversation layered with energy and emotional experiences. My work often comes out of chaos, but then it simultaneously reveals a specific personal order that feels very right to me, like the balancing act of allowing expression to coexist with the external world in the act of creating.”

Neuwirth attended American University before moving to Los Angeles, where she studied under the artist and University of California, Los Angeles professor Martin Lubner for six years. Her work has been influenced by Elizabeth Murray, Frank Stella, Terry Winters and Lee Bontencou, to name a few. Recent exhibitions include The Theater of Balancing Energy at Hidell Brooks Gallery (Charlotte, NC), How Many Miles to Babylon at C24 Gallery (NY) curated by Peter Frank, a site-specific wall construction at LAXart (LA), Waterfall Mansion curated by Kate Shin (NY), and a solo show at Wendt Gallery (NY). She was awarded a special recognition by the National Museum of Women in the Arts and the Southern California Council in 2002. Full resume here.

Geraldine Neuwirth’s virtual exhibition, Thread of Existence, presents a body of work throughout which the artist layers drawing, painting, scribbling, tracing and rewriting in order to develop a personal vocabulary that speaks of the forever growing “thread of existence.” Over the years, Neuwirth has been working with paper to create collages and constructions, developing shapes that exist by themselves with a floating effect.
